Dear reader, It's a brand new year. And one of my resolutions is consuming more and more work of others and not forget to share it whenever I have a chance. There were times the passed year that I completely forgot this section of my website (if not the entire page) and there will be times again this year I'm sure of that. But nevertheless on this second day of January I like to give it a try. I want to start the year of with one of the most important documentary's I've watched in 2022: The Real Story. Here you go: It's not the crime, it's the cover up - Thus journalist Twan Huys who quotes Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. This is what Huys says about the government's apologies to Dutchbat soldiers last June.
The apologies form a link in the last part of the falsification of history (also a word that Huys uses) that takes place here. All the more a reminder to all of us that inclusive and complete storytelling is so important. The cover up of what happened in Srebrenica in the 90's is still a silenced topic. The documentary The Real Story is showing light on what our government closed their eyes from.
Why closing eyes to horrors is harmful and makes suffering a privilege becomes very clear in this episode. With of course the combative Alma Mustafić who keeps telling her story because it should never be forgotten. And because it's the truth.
Medialogica, one of the most pioneering journalism on Dutch television. Episode 5: The 'real' story
